Mandibular Advancement

Long Beach, CA – One of the most common orthodontic issues we treat at HD Orthodontics is what is referred to as a Class II malocclusion. A patient with this kind of bite presents with significant overjet (protruding upper front teeth) and a lower jaw that is too far back in relation to the upper jaw. Once upon a time, we corrected these issues with headgear or bulky, fixed appliances, but those days are long gone.

We now have a more discrete option to correct these issues using Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement. This system is redefining how orthodontists treat Class II malocclusions in our growing patients.

Class II correction via mandibular advancement works by repositioning the lower jaw forward to ensure it aligns properly with the upper jaw. This stretches the surrounding soft tissues and muscles, creating a gentle, constant stimulus for the jaw to remodel and grow. By advancing the mandible, not only can we correct the bite but we can also improve the patient’s profile and provide long term functional benefits. In the past, we achieved this movement through either headgear or Herbst appliances. Both were highly effective, but also very visible and uncomfortable in their own way.

Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement is the first FDA-approved clear aligner system for correcting Class II malocclusions in adolescent patients. It provides a more durable and patient-friendly way to treat these issues.

Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement pairs the power of Invisalign with Enhanced Precision Wings. These small, clear structures are built directly into the aligners on both the top and bottom arches. When your child closes his/her mouth, the wings interlock and work to hold the lower jaw in a forward position. In our growing patients, this repeated forward posturing encourages the lower jaw to grow into a better position and thereby correct the bite.

Invisalign has introduced another powerful tool in its Class II correction arsenal with Integrated Occlusal Blocks, which can help even the most severe cases, including complex deep bites. These blocks are made of the same material the aligners are made from and are built directly into the biting surface of the aligners. They are very similar to the wings, but with some key advantages:

  1. In our patients with severe deep bites, these solid blocks allow for a vertical opening of the bite. This allows us to begin the mandibular advancement phase of treatment sooner.
  2. The occlusal blocks are laser-welded to the aligner, which ensures their durability and rigidity during treatment. Patients don’t have to worry about breaking or crushing them when they bite down.
  3. The blocks provide a versatile solution for skeletal and dental discrepancies. This gives us the power to expand the types of Class II malocclusions we can effectively treat with Invisalign.

The Invisalign Advantage

Invisalign provides an innovative way for patients to achieve their ideal smiles. The added technology for mandibular advancement offers many benefits over more traditional methods.

When your child chooses Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement, they’re getting:

  1. Treatment that is virtually invisible. The aligners and advancement features are designed to be completely clear so your child can smile confidently throughout their time in treatment. There are no brackets, wires, or bulky appliances they have to try to hide.
  2. Treatment that is comfortable. The aligners are made of smooth, BPA-free plastic that won’t irritate the inside of the mouth. The mandibular advancement is programmed in smaller, gradual increments, leading to increased comfort levels.
  3. Treatment that works together. Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement allows for simultaneous correction of both the alignment and the bite. This can lead to shorter treatment times for many patients.
  4. Treatment that is flexible. The aligners are removable, so your child can still enjoy all their favorite foods and stay on top of their oral hygiene. Invisalign with Mandibular Advancement works with your teen and fits comfortably into their lifestyle.
